The Awards Project
It is a Sooperstown belief that players should be evaluated for greatness against their peers, the guys they actually played against. That is all they had control over.
As part of the overall Sooperstown project, a companion project is ongoing to retroactively rank players in a variety of categories. The amount of times a player is ranked, along with the quality of the ranking, helps determine who belongs in which Hall.
Starting with the 1871 season, the categories are both on a League-level and also a MLB-level. They are:
Players (MVP)
Hitters (Aaron)
Pitchers (Cy Young)
Fielders - (Called the Brooks' Awards here in Sooperstown)
Rookies - (Jackie Robinson)
All League/All MLB teams by position (there may be multiple teams during seasons with more than 2 leagues and during the Expansion Era forward)
Silver/Platinum Sluggers by position
Gold/Platinum Gloves by position
All Star teams - The starting All Star team comes from the All League/All MLB teams. There are two reserve catchers on every All Star team each season. The number of reserve infielders and outfielders vary depending on the Plate Appearances/Innings Pitched described in the next paragraph.
To keep the seasons as proportional as possible for equity, the number of players selected each season for the Player/Hitter/Pitcher/Fielder categories varies upon the number of players that achieved either 50 Plate Appearances or 50 Innings Pitched in that season. At the MLB level it ranges from a low of 6 for the 1877-1878 seasons to a high of 70 for the 1998 seasons onward. At the League level it ranges from a low of 6 for the 1877-1878 seasons to a high of 40 for the 1998 seasons onward.
The number of rookies selected varies on the number of rookies in that particular season.
